We have a tendency in our culture to think of ourselves as rational individuals. We think we will thrive so long as we get good grades, high SAT scores and master hard skills. In reality, we are social animals, and we thrive when we educate our emotions. We do that by studying literature and society, learning the stories from our history, and developing an accurate feel for the ins and outs of human nature. These are not soft luxuries, they are the most practical essence of education. The Oklahoma City University Distinguished Speakers Series presents New York Times columnist and NPR commentator, David Brooks.
