Why Our Health Matters: A Vision That Can Transform Out Future

Dr. Andrew Weil has been a guest on Oprah, Good Morning America, The Today Show and NPR’s Fresh Air for his unique and extensive knowledge on health and wellness. His work as a physician has had a revolutionary impact on the practice of medicine.Weil is preparing for the release his new book, Why Our Health Matters: A Vision of Medicine That Can Transform Our Future in September.

“The Oklahoma City community has an opportunity to hear some profound things about their health from one of the greatest experts in medicine,” said Harbour Winn, co-chairman of the OCU Distinguished Speaker series. “Dr. Weil can change the way people view the importance of healthy living.”

Weil is the director of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine. The program was the first to include courses on alternative therapies, mind/body interactions, healing and other subjects not currently emphasized in medical education. According to Weil, the process of aging is a biological fact — anti-aging remedies cannot reverse the physical changes that come with growing older. He believes people can age with grace and offers insights as to how they can delay the onset of age-related disease and discomfort, and what to expect life spans to be like in the future.

He received his doctorate from Harvard Medical School in 1968. After completing a medical internship he worked with the National Institute of Mental Health, then wrote his first book, The Natural Mind. As an Institute of Current World Affairs fellow, Weil traveled widely in the Americas and Africa collecting information on drug use in other cultures, medicinal plants and alternative methods of treating disease. He publishes a monthly newsletter, “Dr. Andrew Weil's Self-Healing,” and has his own Web site.. He is also a columnist for Prevention and Time magazines. He was named one of “the world’s 100 most influential people” by Time magazine.
